Lava Ocean Adventures aboard the LavaKat
#11
John, I read the TA thread - all 5 pages. The video as Shane said, isnt from him but someone who went out alone. The major portion of opposition was from you on that thread. **an observation**.

If you feel strongly about this I can understand your appraising people of the dangers of boating, hiking, or flying near the volcano. I kinda feel that you are specifically pointing out LOA as a bad guy.

So just a funny question - you do sell homes in Lava Zone 1 & 2 right? LOA's danger made be more immediate but yours maybe be more longterm. Just trying to get you to think about it... no make wrong. And maybe on the insurance question, is the same company that insures lava Zone 1 homes???

Hi Kapohocat,

I'm sure maybe some of them can be Green Harvest heli's but there is a different one every 15 minutes. Taking the same path over my house. that is frustrating. I still think the neighborhood should ban together and sign a petition to send to the FAA (as if that would help). I thought about writing something on my roof but then thought that they would harass me more so I decided not to.

No, I did not target LOA and I don't know Shane. There are 43 postings in that thread, and only five from me, that's hardly "the major portion." There was a posting here on Punaweb a while back, it referred to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory web site, the "rough calculations indicate that the chance of loss each year is 0.14% in Lava Zone 1." I am sure the chance of ending up dead in the LOA excurtion is much much higher. BTW, I don't just sell properties in Lava Zone 1, I personally own three lots too and HPIA provides insurance there too. I doubt anyone would insure LOA and even though I am a fairly adventurous person you could not pay me enough to go on that tour. Just my 2c, nothing personal.

hey i've gone out with shane's dad many times to the lava flows and it is one of the greatest experiences i've had in the islands, whenever i have visitors from the mainland i try and take them out also and all of them love it. for someone to criticise this without having done it is beyond me. shane should move this to the classified section, however someone who posts on this forum regularly advertises his business at the end of EVERY post, isn't that like the frying pan calling the kettle black, lol??

I would much rather be on the ocean even close to a lavaflow than flying in a helicopter, they drop out of the sky a little to frequently for me! PS:
LOOK FOR MY BUSINESS ADVERTIZEMENT COMING TO YOU SOON AT THE END OF MY EVERY POST !!

I am sure it is exciting to see the flow from the ocean but it is just a little sweat and a couple of hours round trip to see it from the Kalapana side. In November we hike in and it took about 45 mins. We went in around 5, watched the sunset, walked up on a skylight and walked up on a ledge to look down into the flow. It was awesome.

I could see my husband wanting to do the boat ride. He isn't stupid enough to jump in and swim in the area and would think the breaking open lava thing was very cheesy.

Insurance adjuster's perspective on policy issues: there could be a clause about knowingly entering into an area with known danger. As long as you have disclosed to your company you should be covered unless they specifically told you not to. I am sure you have customers sign a liability waiver but it is worthless.

Helicopters suck. They pollute with noise & noxious fumes.

aloha all,

don't know who is letting people jump into the water, but when i went fishing with bud (shan'es father) the water was far TOO HOT near the lava/floating rocks to jump in! perhaps the swimmers are a bit further away. don't know.

i do know we were about 15 feet from the shoreline, and on the side of the boat away from shore, the water felt like a jacuzzi. when i felt the water towards shore (the boat was only about 10 to 15 feet wide) i couldn't keep my hand in the water! it was scalding hot! the fish must like it, as we caught 3 ahi in about 30 minutes, near the park!

i am a great lover of all things hawai'ian. the people, the culture, the aina, everything. i have nothing but respect and love for hawai'i and truly feel i gained a greater respect and love for all things hawai'ian, after my experience on the ocean near the park. i felt very small and expendable as i watched and wondered how time had shaped these beautiful islands, and how long after i am gone, this process will continue....

just my thoughts...

have a great aloha friday!

malama pono,

holahan

The people brave and/or foolish enough to make such a potentially dangerous trip ought to be able to do so. We all have the choice of whether or not to do it. I just hope they all have good medical coverage.

I also find the helicopter business bothersome. A friend and I hiked to the top of Mauna Ulu in the National Park and were enjoying a very quiet, meditative visit all alone looking into the awesome crater. Suddenly, a helicopter came and hovered noisily over us. It was actually scary. There ought to be some places free from such intrusion, especially in view of the fact that the helicopter companies were reported last year to be something like $2 million in arrears on their overflight fees to the Park Service.

Hey, I paid my way in. They didn't and spoiled part of my afternoon.

Cheers,
Jerry
