There is a slight problem with running rails up the Hamakua coast route. The highway follows part of the same route, same right-of-way as the old railroad. Some of the highway bridges are the old railroad bridges.

I love BART. San Francisco has more seismic activity than many places on earth and the BART is amazing and they make it work. It would be so cool to be able to get to Kona or Waimea in 30 minutes! And YES you can dream...it's allowed.

I love BART too.
I hate riding buses. They make me sick to my stomach and I can't handle them. If they want to get me out of my car and into mass transit -- buses will not do it, not on these winding roads.
I rode the vintage trains, commuter trains, bullet trains and the subways when in Japan for a month, and I loved the system. So I'm pro mass transit, but not long bus rides. I did ride buses around Kyoto, BUT it was city street bus ride, not highway ride, and that's different.

hey if the state has money to blow on a ferry system why not dream...although i'm sure they will have to do something about the traffic situation on oahu first before this happens....i like the though of usuing the ferry from hilo to kona, there would be locals and tourists that would prefer this transport system instead of driving and the coastline around hamakua is very beautiful as a selling point to the tourist crowd.

The idea of the mass transit isn't ONLY to redfuce cars on the road, but to give transportation to those who have limited or no transportation an opportunity...
Think of all those people in HOVE who could work in either Kona or Hilo if a trolley were available? HPP could be changed in a major way. Initially, you have trolley stops only in tghe circle around the island, with large parking lots at tro9lley stations. When the parking becomes inadequate because there are SOOOO many cars, you run a line down into the area. Example... down the three major roads into HPP.... it could be done and it is amazing how fast it does pay for itself. San Diego charges $1 each way. Lots cheaper than a car!!! I say look into it.

California is in the planning stage for a high speed rail system that will run from Sacramento to San Francisco, and then down to L.A. It's possible to build high speed rail in earthquake land.
That said, it would be a terrible waste of money. Buses are cheaper and flexible.
