Aloha, Tim. Mauna Ulu is about two to three miles each way, depending on how much you explore the mountain itself. If you just go to the summit and back, I would say just over two miles each way from the parking area. I highly recommend exploring, though, since there are a LOT of interesting features, mainly on the makai side of the summit. There is a "frozen" river of red lava that is so amazing. It looks like it is still hot. Use EXTREME caution near the lip of the crater, since there are cracks and visible evidence of recent rockslides into the pit.
Cheers,
Jerry

Noel, The only one that has a pool is the YWCA, but the Pahoa public pool is one of the best, and free. There are also recreation programs by the County Park & Rec dept.

I remember that the paper last week had an article about one of the Hilo fitness clubs donating a huge amount of weight training gear to Hilo High, as the club was renovating & updating all of their gear, just forgot which one....

Much appreciation for the info, Jerry. Think I'll take honorable fadah-in-law there when he visits from Japan this winter. He loves that stuff; he's a serious photographer, and nature is his thing. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

If anyone lacks for a good work-out, just come on up and help out!
As you can tell, folks, we get our exercise the old fashioned way -- hard labor for several hours a day will do it! Of course, I don't claim that every muscle group gets it fair share of exercise, but I'm ready for some down time by news time! I do claim that this is great for mental fitness, as it's purely pleasure to see the changes over time to what was once weed-and-invasives-choked 5 acres of Puna land.

Have you seen or tried the Gazelle Freestyle? I have a Cardiomax sit on cycling machine and will get rid of it after getting the Gazelle. My god if you want a self-controlled workout this machine does it. Slow, fast, or blinding speed is your choice. I put in 10 hour days and in the winter this thing really seems to take care of business. I got a used one so not sure of the cost.
I also use a preacher curl on the end of my weight set and that will usually work up your forearms and biceps in just a few weeks. Have a tv to watch and it makes it more relaxing than feeling like it a forced thing to do.
