But on the other hand, the higher the cost for a gallon of gas, the quicker the public will start DEMANDING development of alternative fuels and more fuel efficient vehicles. How many people do we know talk about alternative fuels, better gas mileage, breaking our dependence on foreign oil, but still will not change their driving habits or do not seriously look at AFV's because they secretly could care less about those things, they simply want cheap gas?
I can think of dozens of people I know who when gas was $1.50 a gallon swore that when it hit $2.00 they were getting rid of their guzzler and getting something more efficient or that used an alternative fuel. With gas hovering around $3.00, have they gotten rid of their Suburban or F-250? No, they just complain more about the cost of gas as they drive an additional 30 miles to go to the "new" store with the talked about wine department.
I say make the taxes $5.00 a gallon and see how quickly people look at the MPG versus number of speaker in the sound system.

Some people need F-250s. If gas is $20, they will still need them. Everyone will have to help pay the extra cost for that contractor or farmer who has to pass on that cost. Yes, I realize the new family car is a crew cab full size PU, and that isn't necessary. I have a lowly F-150 4x4 extented cab, contractors special. I got the smallest v8 they offered with no frills. I suppose I could get by with a smaller truck, but it wouldn't be near as practical. When purchasing, I looked and found no alternative fuel trucks. I thought about diesel, but the only engines offered were huge. I think if smaller deisels were offered for both the full size and compact trucks they would sell well. Then at least the option would be there for biodeisel use. I need a truck, but not constantly and I try not to drive it when it isn't needed. I've had it 2 1/2 years with only 14k on the odometer. Even with the small v8 I'm lucky to get 18 on the highway.

oink, My mother drives a 99 Ram 3500 duelly diesel w/5 speed. She gets 24 mpg (around 600 miles per tank) and has lots of power too...
Thats the 5.9l cummins turbo engine. Rumor has it that there will be a chevy 1500 with a smaller isuzu diesel engine some time soon.
