Well I think, I will choose my questions a little more wisely, I am still interested in talking to anyone who lives in a yurt, so far all I get is a bunch of {DONT DO IT} from those who have thought about it but have not actually done it.
I think this forum is one he** of a great site, not only for the knowledge, and the lack of at times, but what a great sence of community, and aloha that the puna area offers. And at this point I dont care if I live in a shack, container, yurt or even a stupid tent as long as it has mosquito netting...my point is I am really looking forward to getting my home sold here, and getting moved over, dont worry I will tell all what an awfull place hawaii is and to never move here.....our little secret[Wink]

Must... resist... ah, can't do it...

Still spending so much time putting yurts down... I'm glad you all are still talking about them though.

Mine field? Yurt construction? Hardly... the building department can answer questions if you want it straight from the horse's (uh-oh, I guess I joined the party after all...) mouth and I'm happy to give you names of plenty of builders and contractors who have experience with them. Financing and lending for construction? Yes, it seems the options are quite limited there, that's a shame. With the exception of funding it yourself or getting a personal loan, I vested some time recently researching the options locally. That's a downfall for many, but the cost does remain low in comparison to the majority of the houses going up these days. Is it the cheapest? Of course not, it seems things can always be done cheaper. Is it a much more affordable than most houses? YES. Is it a more beautiful space than most houses for the cost (and aside from the cost for that matter)? Absolutely! (My opinion, here's a great link to see... http://www.coloradoyurt.com/photos/photo.../index.php
way cool...)
Insurance is an area that should definitely be researched when dealing with any alternative style house, I think most would agree.

Hey lostboy, try this perhaps... google "Big Island yurt rentals". You'll find people with plenty of information on living in a yurt, tell them why you're calling and see what they say. I imagine they'll give you the good, bad and otherwise. StillHope, I'm considering hiring you, you put so much time into this, if I got you going in the right direction I could take some major time off!! You'll be needing a job, right? Wouldn't that be a kicker... (Don't launch artillery at me for that one, please... Peace, love and happiness...)

A hui ho~

Lostboystoy,if you get the actual facts from the people who you met in person on yurts, please, share with the forum.
(Or if you have decided to get a yurt yourself.)

YurtGirl,I am not looking for a job,but if I did,I would go to the employer who is able to give a simple answer on a simple question instead of a lecture on a global warming.

Global warming? WH...? Nevermind, I don't care to engage in that circular match again. Lightheartedness can sometimes be lost in written text, I'm trying though. I seem to recall answering no less than 50 questions by a woman whose first language was not English... wasn't that you? Perhaps the answer was lost in translation, this happens sometimes when we are speaking a second language, it's happened to me plenty of times... I felt that I went far above and beyond to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge and then I found that you translated the information to imply that I said $40,000.00 would only get you a platform, when I'm certain that my words were much closer to: "About $35k will provide the yurt with recommended upgrades for our climate, drafted plans, permitting, cesspool design, plot plan, all labor for platform and materials... etc., etc." Hmmmmm. I appreciated jdirgo's comment about the punapedia... I think a person can only take so much responsibility in educating another person before it falls to the person seeking the info. I am glad that you found a solution for your situation and do appreciate the valid points that you have raised.

your email got boinged.

If you would like it... please contact me.

I learned a while ago... talking to someone who plans to move to Hawaii on credit cards is like talking to someone who is on something.

Yurtgirl!
In case you haven't noticed, the summary was just that-a summary.
In case you haven't noticed, the facts didn't have any comment and nothing negative said.
And if instead of confirming the facts on yurt or suggesting correction of the summary, you are resorting to personal insults...
The fact speaks for itself.

Case in point: I think we have a translation problem. Nothing in my post was written to offend. I did confirm facts on yurts, didn't have suggestions for corrections, and do agree, the facts speak for themselves. Fini~
