Hi All,
This topic made me smile so I figured I'd chime in with my first post. I'm bringing myself, my wife and our dog. Oh, and we'll be bringing tax dollars, engineering skills, a teaching credential and a smile.

What my wife and I want to bring to Puna and Hawaii:
I have been working in the school system in Alaska for 29 years, coaching Jr. and Sr. high school football, basketball, wrestling, and track.
We have worked with Fairbanks Community and Mental Health for 12 years as Theraputic Family Specialist, helping to bring families back together.
I'm, for the past 3 years have been working as a Youth Counselor for Fairbanks Youth Facility. (Youth Correction Officers as Hawaii calls them)It will be nice to get a Youth Facility on all the islands so families can visit and support their children and the counselors that work with them. Being a part of their treatment can help lead a juvenile to become a sucessful adult.
My wife (sorry Damon no sharing [8D]) will bring a loving outlook on life and a great smile because she will be so happy to be out of Alaska's winters. Put your head in your frezzer and you will get a small taste of what its like here in the winters. Can you image -60 for two weeks? She is a loving, caring community serving lady.
When I took her to Hilo in Jan.07. After driving from the airport I remember saying that in 78 there wes nothing from here to here. Riding our bikes in the rain last night (always daytime in Alaska's summers) I told her this is how Puna will be, she smiled and said she was thinking the same thing!
We hope to bring to not take from!

Newcomers can bring:
1. A more humane attitude toward animals. Most newcomers get no pleasure out of seeing chickens shred each other, and feel that dogs and cats are part of the family.
2. Environmental awareness. Some newcomers are aware that you can bespoil an island very quickly and they want to make sure that doesn't happen.
3. A stronger organizational sense: Hawaii is at the latitude of lassitude. As with other warm, languid places, it is sometimes hard to summon the energy needed to meet the challenges of living on an island. Newcomers are motivated --for awhile-- to make it a better place.
4. New blood. The Portugese brought the ukulele and malasadas, the Japanese brought zen and rice,the Mexicans (or maybe it was someone else) brought paniolos who brought guitars which became the Hawaiian slide guitar that screams "You are in Hawaii" and other off-islanders brought pineapples and plumerias.
5. I will be bringing a quirky charm, spotted doggies, a blender, a tenor ukulele, a perfumed pen, and probably by the time I get there lots and lots of gray hair.

Mahalo to Damon for posting this.
I live a simple life and plan to keep it that way when I get to HI. We have almost 30 acres of land so it's doubtful anyone will even be able to see our house! If we try to be real quiet, I bet no-one will even know we're here 90% of the time.
All I have to offer is my friendship, everything else is incidental.

Bringing ranching childhood, 40 years of gardening experience. Millwright skills, electrical, plumbing and the desire to help my neighbors who need help in any of those area's. Wife, Dog, Pension, Health insurance, and a history of community involvement. Some military skills, hope never to require again.[

Dick,
We should get together! I've been a woodworker over 30 years now. Also do plumbing and electrical (but will have no luck plying those trades in Hawaii as they are strict about who does this type of work). Glad I have a lot of trees on my land as I will need the wood.
