Well it looks like the bill got shot down. Acting mayor decided that penalties for using platic bags were too high and vetoed the bill.
Good news is that when Angel Pilago gets elected mayor later today...that will change rather quickly. It ain't over yet!

So sad. I've seen these referred to as urban tumbleweeds. They blow blissfully everywhere and then end up in a giant floating island that threatens ocean life, and all of Hawaii's coastline. A much bigger and braver city in California just banned these. http://www.10news.com/news/17453754/detail.html
Reusable bags are the way to go.

Come up with a solution that will work as well as plastic bags for the majority of the population on this island and maybe people will change their minds! Mesh bags(mildew problem) paper bags, boxes(tree issue, plus does not hold up in the rain) curbside recycling(maybe) but since so many of us do not even have regular county services or even home mail delivery, odds are it's not going to happen in my lifetime. I try to recycle everything, the stores HDPE#2 recyclable plastic bag works best for me. Education, well most people are not bothered, have enough problems trying to make ends meet. And how is the average person with a car suppose to take his loose garbage to the landfill, plastic containers do not work, not enough room, plus the health hazards. There is no easy solution to this, nowt more to say!

Excuses like 'easier' and 'cheaper' and thee ol 'we've always done it this way' have no place in a discussion about environmental issues. If it is bad for the environment it is just plain wrong. There's always an alternative. Nothing is more sacred than the way in which we leave this all behind. Comfort and ease today in exchanged for mounds of trash that grow without end is criminal.. and very possibly suicidal. Any effort, be it small grassroots oriented or national in scope, that tries to address environmental concerns should be applauded and supported methinks. Unfortunately mankind has yet to outlive his infantile Me Me Me dominance over all that he touches.

I have uses for plastic bags too. I can't think of when I have just thrown one away because I use them for dog poop bags. But I completely support this bill. Just because they're useful to me doesn't negate that in the big picture they are a big environmental problem here. I'll have to buy those biodegradable dog bags I guess once it passes. It would be great if being an island with such a fragile and unique environment we were actually a leader on such issues. After reading more about this, I'm voting for Pilago today. I am ready to see Kim go and I don't want anyone connected to him just taking over and giving us more of the same.

I don't understand - What exactly is the objection to having this put for a vote of the people?

Vote with your dollars. It's the only vote that matters. You can't expect regulation to force new values on the community. If it matters to you enough to force other people to change the way they live. . .
If it matters that much to you, don't shop any place that supplies plastic bags. |
