The Native Hawaiian people are not indigenous -- we ALL came here from somewhere else.

use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without

I know that, Lin. I kind of hesitated saying indigenous, but we use the word for Native Americans even though they came from elsewhere too.

Nevertheless, the Native Hawaiians were here, and owned the land at the time all European and Asian peoples showed up, and all land ownership here derives from the King's initial land grants.

Nitpicking aside, if you call anyone who simply lives here a Hawaiian, you are making a mistake and could offend someone. Most times when I do listen to political broadcast and election night summaries, the announcers say "Hawai'i voters." They do not say "Hawaiian voters" to refer to the overall voting in the state. There is a difference and the newscasters are well aware of it.

Since (like Lin W)I don't know who I am in Hawaii and not to insult indigenous population,I decided not to vote.
And,probably, the rest of non-votes were "deleted haoles" too. [B)]

(I predict some "stink eye" -so posted the picture in advance).

I lived in Alaska for 30 years before retiring here in Hawaii and Alaska uses the County (or State) Fairs as a political avenue for residents to get to meet and talk to the people that are running for office. They have booths intermixed throughout the fairgrounds with bumper stickers, hats, tee shirts, written info of where all the candidates stand on different issues....etc etc. In fact..I believe its done like this in alot of other states.

Why can't something like that be done here? Just plan the county fair a few weeks "before" an election. You just may get a larger voter turnout come election day!

It sure beats hand waving along the side of a 55mph highway. Thats an accident waiting to happen and a lawsuit the county doesn't want to have to pay

Hope, I hope you are kidding ... [8D] having some fun?

It's all part of living here. People have ethnic identities. Hawaiian, Portagee, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, haole, and so forth, including hapa. "Hawaiian" is taken, big deal, no reason to feel you don't have a place.

I can't remember if or when someone explained this to me or I just got it on my own, probably because I just went "got it" and moved on. When I moved here I was eager to learn the local usage of words and customs, not interested in challenging and getting offended at every little thing; that would have worn me out.

Jimbo & I were precinct officials (fun way to meet your neighbors & get volunteer money to NFP's)

My precinct (DT Keaau) had almost a third of the voters show up yesterday at the polls.... But far more voted in the primary....

IN ADDITION, many had already voted absentee ballots (the article did not state whether the counts were TOTAL voter turnout, or the ones at the polls yesterday.... ) all totaled at our precinct, probably closer to 50% voted in total... so not too shabby.... but not as high as anyone would hope....
