700 Billion Dollar Bail Out Plan Does Anyone Care?
#71
Was at a women's meeting today. Yes I belong to one conservative women's group, we raise monies and grant it to young women who seek higher education.

As a fiscal conservative and social liberal you see I have dichotomies. I feel if we help encourage and lift people on the way up, they will be prepared to take care of themselves to a greater extent during their lives, and while raising families of their own.

Sorry so long winded, but heard an exaggeration today that blew me away. All those sub prime loans to all those poor people put us in this mess.

Well hang on a minute here, of all the sub prime loans made, most 80% were to people climbing up the housing tree during the boom of the housing bubble these past 6 years! Trading up and up to higher and higher end housing. 20% of those sub prime loans went to low income families. Also the purchasing of the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, residence that is no longer affordable as the fat days are long gone! Tough to keep up with the Jones.

A Realtor at the table where I was lunching said this is precisely so in our community. She said those 20% of the sub prime loans gratuitously given to the poor among us, are less likely to fail than the high end for a number of reasons the most prominent being 1. low income families in our county live 2 to 3 generations to a home, it is their most valuable possession and they are doing all they can to hold on to it. 2. many of the high end loans made on the sub prime market are loosing income and high paying jobs to meet their payments and walking away.

So just one misconception and of course this will all be spun to death in the spin cycle of oxycontin junkies (legal, and doctor shopped???), and viagra smugglers for all tuned into the airways to hear.

EDUCATE a women and you will likely be educating her protoge.

"Sorry so long winded, but heard an exaggeration today that blew me away. All those sub prime loans to all those poor people put us in this mess"

to be more correct:

All those sub prime loans to all those people without the ability to repay put us in this mess.

and to be more objective:

Fraudulent lending practices by borrowers and lenders put us in this mess

pretty simple really

Just heard one of the elected morons in the house state that "the market dropped today because Wall street was throwing a temper tantrum"
Right 350 point drop is a temper tantrum. We truly do elect idiots in this country.[Sad!]

Where in the constitution does it say that the government is responsible for the dow jones average?

I agree, but the statement that the dow dropped as a temper tantrum is absurd. The dow dropped on continuing bad economic news. Not because wall street wants to throw a tantrum. Guys an idiot.

Bullwinkle I do agree, and hold on those practices aren't set to expire until 10-09 if I'm correct in my reading. So the barn door is still open here, and that is scary too.

Dick, I'm way past advocating anything and simply trying to save my own butt. I'm full aware of where this is headed. If I can lend skills and a hand to a few who will take it I don't mind either. It's rapidly becoming not so much an issue of sustainability but survival.

I'm so very afraid you're right. I know we will make it thru this coming melt down, but I don't hold out much hope for the rest of the country. My hope is that the economic recovery bill will buy enough time for the more forward looking states and communities to effect infrastructure changes to enable them to survive. Hopefully this crisis will wake enough people up to get something accomplished, but I don't hold out much hope. Helping yourself takes more effort than most of the American public is willing to expend.

Jon, Speaking of "lost" money (as in "bailout money), I thought the first bomb that went off on 9/11 wasn't in the three towers that collapsed that day. Imho, it went off the day before 9/11 when Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld went on national tv and told us that the Pentagon had "lost" 2 trillion dollars...

As far as I know, it's still missing.

Nationally, I've read that half of the tests of the airports security systems failed when tested. That should mean that half of the "terrorist" plots involving weapons and airplanes should have succeeded.

So...where are they? "They" are nowhere, a fiction as they are defined in the popular mythology.

Maybe that's why the FBI has said they don't have any evidence linking the dead guy, Osama bin Laden, with 9/11. Now Marvelous Marvin, well...that's another story entirely!

"....The decision to go to war was taken without a indictment by the US Justice department and corroborating statements by the FBI to the effect that Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda was behind the attacks. It was taken without an indictment issued by the Justice Department.

At eleven o’clock, on the morning of September 11, the Bush administration had already announced that Al Qaeda was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and the Pentagon. This assertion was made prior to the conduct of an in depth police investigation conducted by the FBI..

The FBI confirmed in a recent statement (July 2006) that "The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on the Usama Bin Laden's Most Wanted page is because "the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11" ..."

I'd just say the big boys are liars and crooks playing the public for suckers on all counts.
