I've had first hand experience with what an animal goes thru when poisoned. When I was growing up, the government was poisoning coyotes to reduce depredation on calves. I found more than one that had eaten a hole in its own stomach to try to relieve the pain. Hence I stand by my statement. shoot a stock killer or wild dog packs, but forget the D*** poison. Or better yet shoot the irresponsible SOB letting them run loose.

Damon,
First, let me say that I am so sorry about your wife being attacked. Was it a wild dog that did this? A dog attack of any kind is awful, not only does it scar a person externally, it can effect the way that person reacts and treats animals, and this fear is frequently transfered to children. If dog owners were more responsible (proper training & containment) for their pets, then these terrible incidents would not have to happen.
I am unaware about wild dogs on the island (and lots of other things I am sure). But there should be some animal control if they are there. Is there not an animal control officer that deals with these dogs? Sorry, I am still new here, but that is surely the only way to correct the problem. Those dogs have reverted to their survival instincts.
Defending your child is one thing, I have no issues with that!
Think about it though, those dogs were at some point here because of irresponsible humans. Either these dogs or their parents or their parents had to have been owned by someone before they could be allowed to roam freely and procreate. I feel so sorry for abandoned animals, of course they revert back to their wild side they are starving... just as the wild horses in Waipio do. As beautiful as they may be, they are not native to Hawaii either.
Regarding poisoning... it is an awful thing. I had a neighbor poison a dog of mine many years ago because I called the sheriff about his dog ( rotwiler supposedly used for security at his business) running free and intimidating me and my children. It actually cornered me in my garage one day and that was the last straw. Three days after the sheriff served him notice to contain his animals, my dog and a neighbor on the other side of his' dogs were poisoned. It cost me over $6,000 and a month of anguish, but we were not able to save my dog. It was heartbreaking. He laughingly told me that I should have taught my dog not to eat "meatballs" from strangers. I still shiver with anger when I think about him.

Devany, so what about all the "Wild Dogs" that roam Hawaii that don't have owners that do terrorize people... are these good dogs? []
I've said it before and I'll say it again... I have no problem punting a wild dog into the next world if it ever get's near my son.
My wife was attacked by a dog and has life long scars on her face because of it.
I won't have any mercy for any beast that is uncontrollable.

Devaney; people like the neighbor you describe, have been known to have their homes burn down while occupied, must be the bad karma associated with poisoning animals. Couldn't happen to a nicer person, IMHO.

Get a dog and spend some time training it. Simply the best protection there is. I have been stolen from in the past, but no more. It took me around eight months to train my dog and it was time well spent. The dog is a mixed breed, muscular, deep bark, with a wonderful growl. He has never been on a chain nor do I walk him on a leash, very [important]. He has only left the property when in my Auto, also very [important]. I have no fences or walls to lock him in and he runs free on my property 24 hours a day. He will bark at anyone that walks by my home but he will not leave the property. If anyone tries to come on my property he will stand in your face and bark and growl until I come and relieve him of his duty. Not one person has gotten by him yet and I have asked friends to try when I was not home. No person will ever trespass when they see a barking dog who is not on a chain, trust me on this.
Buy a dog, train him, love him, but most of all praise him, every time that he dose his job. This will give you the piece of mind that we all want.

Tom, I agree with you about using man's best friend as your home defense system. But that is where we agree ends. I can appreciate you training your dog to be a great watch dog. But off a leash. That is real risky if you ask me. Why? In my case my dogs use to be off the leash too. But my yard isn't fenced. Both my dogs can be nasty if the situation arises. I keep one of my Pit Bulls(80 pound female) in the front yard, and I keep my mixed Pit Bull/whippet tied in the back yard. Together they let me know when humans, or pigs are near by. I use to let them roam freely, but they started wondering to one of my neighbor's property because neighbor had .....chickens!!!! Plus the 80 pounder liked to chase car tires...this really worried me! Plus passerby's looked spooked beyond words when they saw this Pit Bull coming towards them while they passed my house on their bikes. Some rode away so fast that I didn't even have time to get the situation under control.
Tom, what kind of Dog do you have? Aren't you worried about the liability aspect of having your dog run freely?
Oh one last thing. I don't care how well you trained your dog. If your dog goes into "heat", or smells another dog thats gone into "heat". You can throw all that training out the window cause pooch is gonna do what comes natural, and that usually means it's gone off and running for a few days![B)]

OMG Beachboy... All I can think about right now is that poor female whippet that got worked by a male Pit!
I'd love to see a picture of this mutt! I don't think I've ever heard of the combo!

It was about 23 months ago [but who’s counting] that I had to take my wife to the hospital in Honolulu. I had to stay for a couple of days and when I came home we were robbed to the tune of around twenty grand of construction equipment and fishing gear. This will not happen again, believe me.
My dog will not allow this to happen ever again. He is a male mutt with a great brain in his head. He wants nothing more than to please me and begs for my praise. I have taken endless hours in training him and he has paid me back in full with his devotion to duty. I got him from the shelter just hours before it was his turn for the eternal dirt knapp, I now believe that he knew it and has been paying me back ever since.
When I first got him [without a name] he was traumatized from his previous owners that tried to make him into a pig dog. He was caged in a very small cage 24/7 and the other dogs were allowed to chew on him because he didn’t want to hunt. To this day he still eats his food lying down. For the first two weeks he hid under a jeep that I had in the yard and did nothing but eat and hide and sleep until he was convinced that he had nothing to fear from me. He slumbered so much that I named him “Comatose” and now that has been shortened to just Toast. He is my very best friend and we respect each other. He took to his training like a duck takes to water.
To answer your question about liability, no I don’t worry about in fact I would love to be on the liable end of a law suit for his chewing the ass off of some crook. He is the boss of HIS property and every neighbor knows it and respect him for it.

She has "brindle" markings, you can see both the bull & the whippet in her. This dog is a real pig hunter! She jumps straight up in the air to see above wild orchids, then she hits the ground running! My God does she run too. She has wheels that must frustrate pigs, cause she is yet to get hurt herself by a pig.
Damon actually, dog is a coveted on Oahu for hunting!

Okay I bumped this 'cause I just saw the funniest Chihuahua joke, and being an avid Chi fan...couldn't resist!
quote: This guy wakes up one morning to find a gorilla in his tree. He looks in the phone book for a gorilla removal service until he finds one.
"Is it a boy or girl Gorilla?" the service guy asks? "Boy," is the man's response.
"Oh yeah, I can do it. I'll be right there", says the service guy.An hour later the service guy shows up with a stick, a Chihuahua, shotgun, and a pair of handcuffs. He then gives the man some instructions: "Now, Im going to climb this tree and poke the gorilla with the stick until he falls. When he does, the trained Chihuahua will bite the gorilla's testicles off. The gorilla will then cross his hand to protect himself and allow you to put the handcuffs on him."
The man asks, "What do I do with the shotgun?" The service guy replies, "If I fall out of the tree before the gorilla shoot the Chihuahua."

Tom,just yesterday I was at the garden exchange in Hilo. The one lady who helped me at the front entrance told me she had two sheep ripped off from her fenced yard in HPP. She told me that she thought about fogs too. But her brother a cop told her about the liabilities of a homeowner who's pet bites even an intruder faces a lawsuit from the scumbag perp? She got her sheep back, a neighbor saw a man hoist the sheep over her fence. The perp was never charged!!! Why? Because he brought back the damn animals! Who knew? That a perp can bring back stolen property and walk!?
