Silly answer to a silly question

Lack...

How many people do you associate with that might burglarize you... that would know that you have a gun? Remember... Friends of a feather flock together.

Or do you hang a sign up that says "This property protected by Smith & Wesson"

In other words... how in the heck would a prospective burglar know whether you have a gun or not?

And a further question that still has not been answered... is how is that gun going to help if the user is not at home to use the gun?

Maybe something for everyone to agree on:

Guns do not deter burglars. Why not? Because they don't know you have a gun.
But, what if everyone had a gun? Or if I put up a sign? Well then there would be more burglaries, not less.
They'd be after that gun.

Burglars do not want to encounter people. They break in when the house is empty.

Home invasion, that's another, much rarer, matter. But this is about burglaries.

No Beachboy, that is a Tom Lackey statement, but if it sounds like a Sara Palin sound bite, thanks for the complement.

I feel stronger as a citizen to this country in the last 8 years that I have ever felt in the previous 8 years. Yes we have lost some military [heros each and every one] defending us and taking the fight to them. Just what is it that you feel or think is so bad about having a president that didn’t “roll over” when the going got tough?

Well you and the likes of you will be in for some big CHANGES. Be prepared to throw away our military power and redistribute the wealth to the ones that would never fight for this country,
and for the most part are here for a free ride. Welfare and entitlements will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. The day may come when you and others like yourself will claimer for the good old days. You know when a man was man and he backed it up with a peacemaker and not a bunch of fluffy words.

God made men.......Sam Colt made them all equal.

WOW!

What a thread!

Then again - what is this thread really about?

Guns - ownership - usage - terminating a life?

Hawaii vs Texas vs Alaska and "how it's done here, there"?

Rights - laws - "God given" - constitution - personal interpretation?

Neighbors - "Pacifists" - "Leftists" - "Rightest" - "Nazi" - does it matter if when you need them they are there?

Lowlifes - jobless - "welfare" - check the paper, jobs are VERY scarce - have you ever been on welfare, the government dole? Look into the eyes of someone who has tried EVERYTHING and they have to stand in line for "something" to feed their family.

There are answers to every question - but not ALL questions are fully answered?

We have a theft problem in HPP - what will fully answer the question of recourse?

Time will tell - I'm listening?
Time will tell - I'm speaking?

I think if you look at my posts on this thread, you will see I advocate all the deterence possible, Ie. engraving belongings, alarm systems, video camera's, dogs, neighborhood watch, community involement, vigorous prosecution. It is when all these fail and you have a home invasion robbery or worse, that I strongly believe that a firearm is a most usefull tool. It is a tool and is only capable of doing the work it was intended for when directed by a human inteligence. Gun's are not evil, people like the scum that break in and rape, murder or steal are evil. I may not deter a thief using all the above methods, but I can and will be their to protect my family if required. And if I'm not home, my wife has the tools to protect herself. If you come to my door in the middle of the night to request help or calling 911, I will call them for you. I will NOT
,unless I know you, allow you in my home. Not Aloha, no just smart.

Interesting statistics from the Brady Campaign website (http://www.bradycampaign.org/facts/facts..._facts.pdf):

Gun Deaths and Injury - The United States Leads the World in Firearm Violence

• In 2004, 29,569 people in the United States died from firearm-related deaths – 11,624
(39%) of those were murdered; 16,750 (57%) were suicides; 649 (2.2%) were accidents;
and in 235 (.8%) the intent was unknown. [5] In comparison, 33,651 Americans were
killed in the Korean War and 58,193 Americans were killed in the Vietnam War.[6]

• For every firearm fatality in the United States in 2005, there were estimated to be more
than two non-fatal firearm injuries.[7]

• In 2004, firearms were used to murder 56 people in Australia, 184 people in Canada, 73
people in England and Wales, 5 people in New Zealand, and 37 people in Sweden. [ 8] In
comparison, firearms were used to murder 11,344 people in the United States. [10]

• In 2005, there were only 143 justifiable homicides by private citizens using handguns in
the United States.[10]

When 300000 people a year die from obesity related diseases, perhaps leaving cookies out for the thieves would prove a more deadly deterrent than firearms. Of course one runs the risk that an unattended child may bypass the cookie jar safty mechanisms and become obese too. Perhaps we should padlock all cookie jars. Perhaps we should require training courses in the handling of cookies, and ban cookies in general in high risk and urban areas.

A little bit of perspective may be warranted in this discussion.

I think it would be constructive to ask a couple of questions.

First--is proactively protecting ones property a right, or is it a responsibility? I personally view it as the latter, and a responsibility that many are negligent in.

Second--is the Western perspective "crime comes from poverty" more valid than the Eastern perspective "crime comes from wealth?" Of course, it's both, Acknowledging this fact may shed light on ones responsibility to the community. Especially in the context of moving mainland money into an impoverished community and force feeding new expectations on the population.

As a kid that grew up with a dad who was a Funeral Director and spent some time working in law enforcement right out of college in the very gun-toting state of Idaho, from a first hand perspective I'm utterly convinced that firearms are perhaps the ONLY real deterrent to private property crimes.

But Pete, you are ignoring basic facts, just like any Reid-Pelosi Move On Liberal who wants to take my guns!! Here's the scenario: I leave my house in HPP to go to Kona to hit the beach in the morning and stop by Costco in the afternoon. Three mokes in a pickup drive up to my house with the intent of committing a felony therein (taking my stuff). Solution? Very simple. My neighbor calls me on my cell phone and says "You gotta couple of mokes in your house". I get out my long range rifle with the special optics sight, I aim for the observatory on Mauna Kea. Of course I hit it. The bullet goes glancing down to the Windward side of the island straight to my intended target in HPP and pierces the moke through the heart as he is carrying out my prized antique gun collection. The other mokes scream like little girls and scramble. Of course, none of this ever actually takes place because all the meth addicts and drunken thieves on the island are so terrified of me. That's because I swagger (and not just because of the jock itch), walk around muttering "bring 'em on" and sit around alot on my lanai in a rocking chair with the a gun in my arms. Mission accomplished! No more crime in Puna! It's so simple. I know, I could be snorkeling, but waiting around for the statistically unlikely is so much more fun.

Note to Texans: If I want BBQ, bluebonnets, rattlesnakes, guns, chile and East Coast Brahmins parading as Texans, I'll move to Crawford. I don't so I will move to Hawaii.

If every resident had a firearm in the home and had the absolute right to defend what is rightfully theirs, do you think we would have these fools walking around ripping off any easy victim they come across?

The problem is that these perps can rip you off all day long and if they do actually get caught red handed stealing the power tools you use to earn a living. 9 times out of 10 here in Puna the perp will be released "Pending Further Investigation" within minutes, and youll never hear another word about it..... I need my tools and wont be able to feed my 3 young children without them. Take my tools and your stealing my way of life and my ability to earn an honest dollar.

I AM A NON VIOLENT AMERICAN!!!!!! who wont stand for some low life stealing from my lively hood.

I am really sorry Roger if I contributed to this thread going away from your original topic... I moved away from the Big City to escape violent crime. Got rid of all my firearms and thought I was safe from criminals here... I really believe if more of us would not stand for this crap, it wouldnt happen. To many of us let the little things slide, which only tells others that they can take alittle bit more from you [Sad]

As for banning guns, I would love to live in a world without them!!!

and back in the mid 1970's I thought the Washington DC Gun ban would fight crime and lower the homicide rate. but IT ACTUALLY WENT UP.

If you use some common sense in how you live (fence, parking arrangements etc.), nobody will know with certainty whether or not anyone is home. Of course they never know when you will get home.

On the other hand, I would not be against a special HPP tax to cover the cost of a couple of contract police officers, provided there was assurance that they would be in addition to the current patrols and not a replacement for them.

Don't worry, I won't bring all of my guns. Lets see, a shotgun for birding, a .22 rifle for utility, fun, pests, farm type uses etc., a .22 pistol for practice and just fun cheap plinking, a .223 mini 14 for pigs and maybe goat hunting, maybe a .308 bolt for hunting (it might be overkill) or a .223 bolt, a full size kimber mainly for fun and maybe some competition if I can find some that wouldn't embarrass me too bad, my cute little springfield micro .45 because it's my favorite carry, and an old short 12g pump for a house gun because it works well and when you rack it the baddies will likely haul ass and you won't have to use it. The rest I will probably give to my boys.
