"And know this, Hitler was a huge anti-gun nut as all tyrants are."

Really? He owned a gun. He used a gun. He shot himself with a gun.
Not what I'd call anti-gun.

ah, but you miss the point.

You need to watch out for those people who don't want other people to be armed.

It's interesting to me but few in this country know the real origins of gun control legislation. While the blame is typically laid at the feet of "progressives" the initial loss of rights and the "militia only" interpretation of the 2cd Ammdmt dates not from the left, but the right, during the labor unrest and the general strikes of the 20's, backed by a very powerful pro business and anti gun lobby.

What entrenched power fears most isn't an armed rightwinger chewing tabacco and plinking at bean cans in the back yards--but rather armed liberals.

All this rape, torture and murder fantasy is precisely what is resented about mainlanders bringing their "In Oklahoma we did it such and such way" crap here. As I said earlier, there is no report or history of armed robbery, rape, torture or murder in HPP. You wallow in fantasy... perhaps wishful thinking.

In this case a number of folks, newly arrived or thinking on it, want to bring their criminal fears here with them and, in so doing, risk ratcheting up the problems we have and making them worse. Please do not take a bad situation and make it worse. You will then be part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Leave Texas behind. Leave Oklahoma in Oklahoma. Leave your Washington memories in Washington. If you can't do that then please remain where you are.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Don't know how much fantasy it is. I subscribe to the tribherld online and there sure seem to be a lot of women missing. Don't claim BI is any worse than anywhere else. I would advocate the same sense of situational awareness no mater where you live. Practice the same preventive measures to reduce your risk exposure to crime. Take all reasonable precautions to be safe in your home. That certainly doe not seem to be ratcheting up the problems listed here in HPP under attack. I for one would never wish for rape or torture of anyone. I would however urge anyone to be aware of the possibility of that happening anywhere and being prepared. If one is not supposed to do that in order to be qualified to live in Hawaii, to damn bad.

My earlier rather wordy treatise on flight instruction was intended to make one point. There can be a great gulf between theory and what you actually get when you are facing an emergency. It's not that I find the concept of "two warning shots to the head" abhorrent in this day and age of crystal meth. However, the attitude implied is that the homeowner will be in control of himself when the time comes and will not have severe tunnel vision allowing him to see only what he wants to see.

I would go to jail for the rest of my life rather than see a loved one raped and murdered. If however I blow someone away that really wasn't a threat, I still go to jail for the rest of my life. Now that is just plain stupid. My point is that I have seen smart people do stupid things with expensive airplanes that could have gotten people killed, often because they read something in a book that made an impression but unfortunately they did not read enough things in enough books to get the entire picture. It is a recognized risk and as such lots of training goes into doing the right things in the right order at the right time because in an emergency it is very difficult to think. By definition you are not thinking. You are reacting instinctively. I think this applies to the handling of firearms in an emergency. The hunter in my previous post was able to work the action of the gun and pull the trigger but he literally did not see what he thought he saw. He thought he was sighting along the barrel of the gun but he obviously was not. Thank goodness he had been trained to hold the muzzle in a safe direction. It was learned by practice and required no thought. Unfortunately his hunting success was poor enough that coming face to face with his quarry counted as a startling emergency.

I have to say from my own youthful experience that young people can be amazingly stupid. I don't know how to reliably differentiate between those that are merely stupid and immature from those that are threatening. I recognize that today crystal meth can make animals out of people. There was a woman murdered in Ewa Beach on Oahu by a 15 year old whom she was going to testify against because he had broken into her house earlier. If anyone deserved two warning shots to the head it would be him. Nevertheless there are some out there who are merely stupid and immature thrillseekers.

The point about picking a better neighborhood before resorting to gunplay has some merit in that moving away or not moving in in the first place is certainly an option, however onorous. All options should be considered, even if it is only to reject them. To never have considered an option means you don't have full command of the facts.

When I train my students we go over things that have gone wrong for others and really dig into them so the student does not have to do this analysis later in an emergency. I think lots of first responder types like fire, police, EMT get similar training. I readily tell them that there are some times when they should be, if not afraid, at least on edge, because at certain times they have fewer options and they may need to pick one alternative and go with it at maximum speed. Moral; you should analyze things as best you can beforehand. Some options may be eliminated entirely as having too many negative consequences. As a result you should be confident but not foolishly complacent. Two warning shots to the head may be the correct response in some rare circumstances but it still smacks of complacency in a way. There is no easy answer.

OK, not that I want to change the subject away from our right to self defense, but...

My wife was staying on Paradise Ala Kai and on this past Thursday morning the Police were investigating a B&E that occured Wednesday, 11/19. It's happening here and now.

Today my neighbor to the back and I were talking and he told me to be on the lookout for a purple/burgundy pickup. Perhaps a little mitsubishi or something. The break in occured around 25th and Shower and a good neighbor did catch the plates, but when they were called in they didn't match the vehicle. I will definitely vouch for the authenticity of the Paradise Ala Kai, but the purple car is a little bit more third hand so my appologies if the details are not exact. So, I guess the best thing we can do is perhaps get to know our neighbors even the ones we don't really care for.

Cheers,

Sean

Dana Ireland was no fantasy.

The guy 4 houses away on my street near beaten to death with a claw hammer about 8 months ago was no fantasy.

The kid the biffed some tourist guy in the back of the head and killed him a year ago was no fantasy.

The tweaker in Volcano 2 months ago that started pushing people around and making death threats in the laundry mat because he thought someone stole his soap was no fantasy. Unfortunately it came to me to clean that up.

If were to attend, I expect, the local battered womens clinic, I expect you'd find few fantasies there either.

Don't be paranoid. But being naive is equally dangerous.
