How bout you retire already so the young guy can get a job enough to support his family so he doesn't HAVE to commit crimes to survive. Figure its the least you can do after the mess you left. What? You lost all your money??? can't retire? To bad! suffer for awhile. Learn to live what you preach, walk in our shoes for awhile, tough ain't it? Is there anybody out there that thinks the next generation is gonna get social security? What about a pension is there such a thing anymore? What about real estate think we can retire on that? Geez, guys. I go to Texas for Thanksgiving and the hu-hu just goes on and on. Mama and her shotgun make less noise than some of the folks on this thread.
I only have time to comment on a few items here, but here goes: Item #1. Is the HPP Neighborhood Watch mostly retirees and greying Baby Boomers? Yes, it is. Why is that? Because none of you other people have the time, concern, or cajones to get off your butts and get active. Some of you do, however, have the time to get on Punaweb to complain and to criticize those who DO try to do something. As someone who cares enough to participate, I find this carping offensive when done by non-participants. Join up, make suggestions for improvement, and do something. THEN I will accept your criticism. Item #2. Is the HPP N.W. worthless? No it is not. There are areas where HPP N.W. activity has had a deterrent effect. Could we do better? Absolutely. For a possible solution, see Item #1. Item #3. Are the Police in Puna effective? Not to the extent that they should be. IMHO this is partly due to lack of resources being allocated and partly an attitudinal issue. Item #4. Are the courts too lenient? Hell, yes. Look at the number of repeat offenders walking around loose and the light sentences being handed out, and you will get the picture in short order. I have to go now and get goodies for the feast. Mama is imposing a sobriety rule on the cowboys this year. If they can't walk a straight line or if they smell too much of liquor, she is making them eat on the patio with the rattlesnakes. Anella, don't for a minute blame us for some worthless scumbag committing larceny for a living. The military will be glad to provide job skills to anyone with the cojones to enlist. Quit whinning, there are a lot of us who come from backgrounds that are every bit as under-privileged as the anyone in Puna. I make no apology for my retirement, I got it the old fashioned way, I worked for it, instead of sitting on my @@s and complaining that no one gave it to me.

Sorry, a correction. Alaska is no 6. on the list in the amalagam for overall crime. Hawaii is no 37.

Save the economy RETIRE! --- IMHO anela111 is more correct than not, though it certainly seems as if there is more than enough anger to go around -and in fairness, any and every generation inherits a huge mess from those couple generations going immediately before, muddling through as best they may while making all sorts of blunders and errors along the way (the Boomers perhaps no more so or less so than other generations, though the stakes are indeed now significantly larger because of the permanent and global nature of some issues involved). Certainly, I am striving to do my part in heeding anela111's excellent admonition to help the situation by retiring ASAP and so make room for eager new workers to follow in pulling at my old harness! The sooner, the better, I agree, and not entirely in jest: young minds and fresh perspectives are critical for success in meeting the challenges we all face together. As I read the increasingly harsh insults and cutting invective being flung back and forth a question comes to my mind: "What is the payoff?" Indeed, why bother with spending one's precious time that way? The reality we end up having is the one we sink the most attention, energy, consciousness and work into creating within and around ourselves, so what is the payoff in focusing on divisiveness and angry insult? Nothing good, imho.
