Another huge storm cell is approaching Puna. This one has thunder cells in it. Looks like another day to stay home.

Can't translate into a rain gauge but more than 50" in deep end of our pool. Not that we were ready for it.

It hit 28" in 24 hrs back in 197?. Enough to wipe out most US cities. New record coming up?

This a link to the NOAA hydrology pages. At the top (under the draught advisory link) there's a 24-hour rainfall summary. That will show you decent data for the island rain gauges. There's a map of the gauges on another link.

We are at the 1060' elevation mauka of Pahoa, and recorded 6.06" of rain in our gauge from midnight to midnight yesterday.

Cught a glimpse of snow on Mauna Kea just as we were getting up this morning! Almost makes all this rain worthwhile ;-)

This is SO strange! When I came to Puna on Dec. 7, huge snowstorms began back in Michigan, unabated until I returned (to gentle rain). The day before I left Hilo, sunshine. Christmas morning, cloud cover. While at the airport, heavy rains began that prevented view of the harbor. Sprinkles started as we taxied out of Honolulu.
Huge storms were happening in Colorado/Utah as we flew over the west (50 MPH winds they say), now its 57 degrees here in Mich.!
Can anyone explain why my cellphone power was draining so fast while in Puna but now its holding again? My house is in Nanawale (my neighbors were so good to me! Saw the Keaau parade, too) - are there any magnetic power grids active? The power bars dropped when I hadn't even used it - no signal bars even showed, so I didn't get them confused.
I AM BLESSED.

Was clear enough to get a shot of the mountain this morning. Sorry about the low resolution. Attempted to upload a higher resolution file but it was taking forever.
