Not sure what you mean by that last line. Can you explain?
Assume the best and ask questions.

Well

It just seems like a few people can show up at a council meeting and they can sway a vote.

The Vocal Minority !!

And it's partly my fault,because I don't attend.

Well just be careful what you wish for because the internet brings a whole new set of problems for your Puna kids.

Be aware that everything you post on the internet is out there almost forever. Explains why most of us don't post our real names here and limit the amount of personal information we give out. So your kids photo who attends an elementary school in Hilo could end up almost anywhere on the internet on almost any site not related to Puna (lots of nasty people trolling the internet these days).

So yes asking the parent's permission to post their kids pics is a good idea. Sounds like a pain but I vote for that.
For the same reason you should monitor your teenagers myspace pics cause at this point there's no way to lock those pics either from being copied (password to myspace accounts are stollen everyday).

Scam alert: this morning I received a call from a man saying that my internet listing was about to expire, and I owed 700 dollars on the account. I never signed up for anything, so I knew he was lying. He insisted he had all the account info on me, and wouldn't tell me his name or who he worked for! I hung up. Just wanted to warn other small business owners.

The internet is here to stay. The quicker people learn how to deal with it and what you should and shouldn't do, the better. The advantages of internet access far outweigh any imagined risks, IMHO.

So what if somebody copies a photo of someone? I've never understood why some people get so worked up about something which, to me, seems as unlikely as it is pointless.

Do you think there are more "nasty's" trolling the internet then there are in real life?

It's thought processes like this that I believe really take away from our kids learning curve.

I post my sons picture all over the internet. I use my real name for everything.

Stand by what you write... don't BS... Speak from your heart... And you won't need to hide behind a "Screen name"

I'll give out just about any personal information someone wants besides my PIN number and Social Security Number.

And just curious... how do you know you are even monitoring your childs "Real" Myspace page?

I know kids that set up myspace pages so they can show their parents.... but then they have their "Real Myspace" page that is for them to do what they want when mom and dad aren't around, and their parents have no clue.

I agree with everyone that we are technology challenged here on the BI. I come from a high tech background when I was on the mainland. I for one support technology especially for our children's sake. If they are not exposed to this they will be behind the rest of the world.

I do a lot of work on computers here and most of my customers are still on dial-up! While this is fine it is beyond belief how Time Warner runs a cable down one street in my neighborhood but refuses to run it down the other 4 streets. I have a close friend who lives at PP 35 in the sub division next to mine and the cable stops at PP 30. When he called Time Warner they quoted him $5,000 per PP to run the cable before they could connect his house.

Not sure if the following is true or not. I hear that a lot of the young people that were born and raised here are leaving for the mainland. The reason I hear for this varies. But for the most part, if this is true, they will no longer be technology challenged and some will eventually come back and will influence those who are still afraid of the Internet.

I for one feel I am doing my part (in a small way) to help bring information and technology into our community here. When I retire in 10 years I plan to do more.

Where I still live (for 45 more days as of today) the local community colleges have all sponsored multiple basic computer/internet/email courses geared towards the older population.

They are usually once or twice a week for 3-6 weeks. They have made the courses either free or very low cost and hold them off-campus at local grade and high schools as well as other community centers. This gets the people to attend and learn in more comfortable surroundings and the courses have been a big hit. They fill up rapidly.
