I love Deschutes stuff. Especially their Inversion IPA and Obsidian Stout. I like Mirror Pond too.

Anyone seen Belgian Ales here? That is my style. Even something as pedestrian as Duval or Chimay would be great. We brought two cases of Belgian Ales with us but I am sad to say, we just finished off the last bottle of Westvleteren this weekend in Waipio.

I live in Ohio and a friend of mine visited Belgium last year. Got the recipe for Westvletern and cloned the yeast. We are now brewing this fine Belgium in Ohio. 72 22oz. bottles for $180.00. Dennis

You are kidding me? How did you clone the yeast? Which ale did you make: 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 or 12.0 (which actually is only an 11.5 most of the time)? Where are you in Ohio? We have family there!

We make the 12! Mmmmm Good. Not sure on how the yeast was cloned, but my friend and son said it is pretty easy. Just need to get it growing in an existing bottle by adding a little sugar and then growing it in a separate container. My friend said that this beer actually is supposed to get better with age and has set aside a couple of cases with waxed tops for 5 years and 10 years out as an experiment. We brew this at a place called the Brew Keeper in North Ridgeville, Ohio. We live in Ravenna, just outside of the Cleveland/Akron area.

Chimay and a few others are available at Waimea Wine and liqure store, and I have seen them at the Kona wine store. The store in Waimea runs excellent sales on seasonal items. They had Sam Adams Octoberfest for $5.99 a 12pk last november (not the best beer but a great price on it), I bought around 7 cases. They also had a pumpkin beer for $3.99 a six pack and a GREAT holiday sky Vodka at $3.99 a bottle. That store also carries the beer from my local micro brewery back home, Fish Tail Brew, at $13.99 a 6 pack making it DAMN spendy.

Best bang for your big bucks here for local is Big Swell IPA and Coconut porter, both Maui Brewing Co. and both pretty spendy. If you like their Coconut Porter, Senior Billys has it on tap in captian cook, they also have Seirra Nevada's Pale Ale, a Mexi beer and a few Kona Brews on tap. They even do $2.00 pints and free chips and salsa during happy hour. The Coconut porter is $3.00 during happy hour. I beleive $2.00 micro pint is the deal of the year on the Big Island.

I've heard about Waimea Wine & Liquor from friends. Why can't I ever remember to stop on one of my Kona runs? Maybe it doesn't jump out at me, where is it located (probably in plain site)? Captain Cook is a little too much in gas from the Puna area.

Alvin's store is excellent, great wine, WONDERFUL cheese & Salumi and excellent service, but I would not really call it a beer store. It is on the right hand side of the road 64-1010 Mamalahoa Hwy. before you get to town. It is not called Waimea Wine and Liquor, but Kamuela Liquor Store.

Sorry Dirk, I did not see your post as it was on a previous page. That is great, I will stop in there next week and get some Chimay and whatever other Belgians he has. I never noticed it there before, but I was buying wine, salumi and cheese on those runs!

General question aimed at no one in particular:

Do you think Puna district would support a microbrewery in Volcano?
