okay. i don't know a thing about beers. but, cost-u-less had a thunder (bird) (head) something like that IPA for $12.99/18 bottles. what i recall was that there was a pyramid on the box. eek! my memory fails me.

I know that many from Kau would support a micro brewery in volcano. The locals would really support your beer if it was light and in a green bottle. : ) I think Volcano would be a great location especialy with tourists. I think micro brewerys have only had great success over the last 5 + years. I cant think of to many / any that have shut down. It would be really nice if we had a local brew that wasnt the most expensive 6 pack in the store. I really dont understand Kona Brews pricing when there $9.00+ 6 packs are brewed and processed in the same factory as other brews being sold at $14.00 or less a 1/ 2 rack.

Your memory is actually spot-on! I suspect you saw Pyramid Brewery's Thunderhead IPA.

Chimay up there in W. town is 13.99 per bottle !!! The (super) market has it too. I think it would be more fun to drink it with some non-symbiotic Mexican food @ the Taco shop up there since they have it anyway. Eat before 5 for a better deal.
Mehana/ Kona are just another one of those 'label' beers >>> same s--- different bag kine. Same goes for everything else brewed ( and commercially available ) in Hawaii IMHO ... NO - Ting worth it ... That includes the over hyped Hinanu and Primo ....I feel bad for people that stick up for this piss. Tired of Std. Sierra Nevada and the same 'ole Bigfoot ? .... Try the Torpedo and see what a real good beer is all about.

I am a Porter and Stout lover so it is even more difficult for me to find good beer here. I have been buying the Deuchetes stout and porters at KTA. But recently I found Black Hawk Stout and Sierra Nevada Stout at the J. Hara Store in Kurtistown. I am enjoying the Black Hawk Stout right now and when I polish that off I will start on the Sierra Nevada and see how it tastes. Both are $10.99 a six pack but were on sale for $9.99 when I picked them up.
There was a porter there as well that I have never seen before but I can't remember the name of it at the moment.

IPA = India Pale Ale. First brewed in the UK several hundred years ago! From memory, the "India" part was nothing to do with where it was brewed but to where the beer was sent, presumably something to do with the British colonisation of India.

The other guys are correct in that IPA stands for India Pale Ale, developed in the UK in the early 1700s for transport to India. It was concocted to withstand the voyage without spoiling.
However, that doesn't really describe the beer itself! An IPA is aggressively hopped and therefore pretty bitter. (Hops are a natural preservative.) They tend to have a mild malt flavor. Also, an IPA will probably have a medium-high alcohol content, typically 6.5%, a bit stronger than your typical Bud or Coors at 5%. (Alcohol is also a preservative, obviously.)
West Coast IPAs, like Torpedo and Thunderhead, usually use several varieties of hops to enhance the flavor notes. Often, there will be citrus or floral notes as a result.
In my opinion, IPAs are very thirst-quenching and refreshing in hot weather and go well with spicy food. Just the thing for India!
