We fly our dog direct SF to Kona on United. I am not sure on the schedule. Arrange with Ag for direct release to Kona. It is so much easier!!!

We flew with a dog and cat direct from SFO to Kona on UAL, but that was in January. Our bay area vet had a specialist that handled all of the paperwork for us.

Cakelady, it takes 6 months for all of the paperwork on the mainlnand and one month for the approval from Honolulu (even if you are arriving in Kona). Assuming that you already did the mainland work, you would have already have had to had a ticket for yourself and reservation for your pet in with your paperwork to be coming here within a month. Most airlines do have a "summer ban" on certain breeds that have short snouts because of the heat. Some airlines have a complete summer ban on shipping animals because of the liability. It is not when they are in the air that it is a problem, but if planes are sitting on the tarmac for an extended period of time, that is when the hold is not pressurized and when the heat can be a problem.

The Kona vet that is an agent of the state is great, but guess what? She goes on vacation too! You really need to have all of your ducks in a row when shipping a pet here.

You may have to leave your dog with a friend till the fall and then have him shipped here.

Good Luck!

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany

hey there - we are traveling with dogs as well from northern california in july. we just got off the phone with hawaiian air and found out that the embargo is only at the following airports: las vegas, phoenix, san jose, and sacramento. we are flying out of san francisco and have confirmed that there is no embargo out of this airport. please note you have to make reservations specifically for your dogs and the cost is an additional $225 per dog. we are flying into hilo with a stop in oahu to clear the dogs through agriculture. good luck!

We used Hawaiian Airlines in July of 2008 with our Rottweiler, and in September of 2008 with our 3 cats. All we needed was a little note on their health certificate (or even a piece of paper would work I a sure), stating that it was ok to travel with our pets at that time, with weather up to 89 degrees. With our dog they asked for tis bit of notation which they had never mentioned before... so my husband being who he is, ended up being able to write the note himself as the owner of the dog.

Since his brother was shipping our cats to us a few months later, we made sure the vets wrote the note themselves on the health certificate and from what we know, nothing ever came up about it. Hope this helps! [Big Grin]

please make sure your acclamation certificate is set for 10 degrees higher than the expected temp in the afternoon....Its a pain in the but to jump through all the hoops but dont give up and dont skimp make sure all your papers are in order if one thing isnt right they wont allow you in...we had to have our vet fax to the airport a new acclamation certifiate because the temp was going to be within 5 degrees of what the expected temp was going to be that day..[8D]
We used Delta airlines..
