Haena beach access or the lack of it

You are so right, Bullwinkle. That type of accommodations would be a big hit over here. The Hana of the Big Island.

I deleted my post so as not to upset anyone with my opinion on shoreline access.

There is a tremendous opportunity for shoreline access at Hana hotel and great lunch after if wanted. It would be a good model just about anywhere

I thought it was an excellent post, LG. For my part, I'm sorry you deleted it, and glad I got to read it.

I do not remember the total details, but the planned resort development was not on the private land, at the beach & inlet where their homes are

(BTW most maps, inc. USGS maps and esp older ones do not label the inlet & beach area, where the private house & salt & pepper sands are, as Haena beach, that is normally labeled farther down the coast, but there are some maps, most from the last few decades, that have that label on the inlet beach... so there is much confusion).

The planned resort was to be on their land on Kaloli point & up, augmenting a small beach and cove area there. Fuzzy memories of mixed units, & I seem to remember that there was low development (2 stories??? maybe... but this was a long time ago in my memory) Again to stress, at the meeting they had stated that much infrastructure would need to be in place prior to this resort development, but adding the infrastructure was part of their development plan.

I have to apologize to anyone I offended. I have to admit I have only been here on the Big Island for a couple years now and

I don't have a solid grasp of the way local politics work.

I just know that when I see unfairness I am compelled to point it out. Plain and Simple.

I lived on Maui for many years and the fact that it is so small really forces the issue of beach access.

Doesn't matter how Rich one is or how much land is controlled by One family or Corp. The people usually get what they want.

Bullwinkle is right. Hotel Hana gets it right. It's user friendly even though it's remote and the Hotel-Ranch controls most everything they do allow people to access the best beach Hamoa Beach through their grounds.

I'm finished with trying to change opinions on beach access here.

It's just a sad state of affairs.

There are so few nice beaches here. and in my opinion they are mismanaged and neglected by the County.

Some things I wrote before were out of frustration. Sorry, I am humbled.

Maybe ten years ago there was a planned Japanese golf resort to go in between Ahalanui and Pohoiki. A main water trunk line magically appeared down Pohoiki road and over to Ahalanui. What a fantastic coincidence!

(The golf resort stopped when the Japanese bubble burst)

Greg, the Onemea EIS is the standard that UH uses in their EIS courses. It was not the funding that was the issue (The funding was mostly local & politically based)

Much of the problem was with the golf course, waste water and road re-alignment, even though now the county paid to re-align the road as the Onemea EIS had proposed. The public did not want that change, at that time.

Carey,
I'm not sure I understand what you're refering to.
My point was that as many populated areas there are without county water, the county sure got it quickly four miles to a relatively unpopulated area that coincidently had a Japanese resort being planned. It was like the county was going out of it's way to entice these developers.

I'm happy both for the water at Pohoiki, and the failure of a golf development here.[8D]
