If it's the yellow Civic I'm thinking of, an odd color yellow, it's not testosterone or racism, it's ice. That car is all over Pahoa all the time lately. We even had to stop 2 cars behind him one day while he made a deal in front of Village Cafe. I've seen this car parked at several locations in Nanawale too.

I bought a bright yellow Focus and every now and then I get funny looks and even stares as if people are expecting me to be the guy who owned it before me (I got it used). I've had a lot of bright yellow cars (cause they're so easily seen - i.e. i'd hope safer) - I didn't know they were faves of jerks, too! (uh oh, maybe I'm a jerk and I don't know it)

Tourist,
If you don't collectively blame us for one driver with a bad attitude, we won't collectively blame you for all the inconsiderate, distracted, and generally clueless tourists who make it a real pain to drive around Puna taking care of the daily affairs of life for those of us who aren't on vacation. OK?

Thanks and enjoy...

What road were you on, and where on that road? Was it one of the narrow roads that are only 1 to 1.5 lanes?

This is one of the posts that's impossible to answer without some real information. Like, what road, what stretch of road, could tourist see and sort of describe the driver, anything on make of car or the shade of yellow, what time of day, describe what happened that made it a game of chicken.

Also, to OP, is it your first time in Puna, and have you encountered other hostility, or is it this one incident. What made you come to Punaweb?

Without information it's just wide open to speculation and suppositions that are likely to be wrong.
It would be nice if you would come back and flesh out the story. Please don't use us to vent and run; that's not very courteous either.

I know the exact car that "tourist" refers to. It is a yellow Honda CR-X and this guy has almost run us off the road twice in as many weeks. Both of our encounters were on Rt. 132 and he was coming straight at us at at least 100 mph. On one occasion, his buddy was hanging all the way out of the passenger side window. There are areas on that road with no shoulders...just lava rocks on the side. This is a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. We have also seen him in both Pahoa and Hilo. On a hunch, we found him parked at Pohoiki one day and got his license plate number. I came home and called the police, but of course, they could do nothing about it. I begged them to take the info from me. Hopefully this guy gets caught before he kills himself and other innocent people.

Jeez, how scary!
So what happens when he's coming at you? Does he veer back into the right lane at the last moment?
I have little faith in the police down there, but ignoring your report is a bit much. I would call then back and insist on talking to a captain. Tell him the story and their lack of initiative is going in the paper as a letter to the editor, that you are contacting your council person, something to make him pay attention.

If it is a pattern of behavior, then eventually someone will get hurt or killed, and if the police were given the license number and did nothing ...

I may be wrong but I would call that behavior assault with a deadly weapon, as he deliberately put you in fear of imminent harm. Reckless endangerment, something.
Assault is the reasonable fear you will be battered. Battery is the actual touching. Assault is still a crime even if you are not hit. as I was taught in my law classes. (not a lawyer; it was just a class).

We have a very devoted assistant district attorney named Mitch Roth who can be very direct with situations.

Having a license number helps a lot.

I suggest anyone with first hand info and license number should call Mitch Roth at 934-3508 during business hours.
Assume the best and ask questions.
