Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad!
#31
O.K. I give up! [xx(]

BUT before I go - If either Chusymom or mdd7000 could have put aside their "ASIDES" - this topic MIGHT have enlightened. [Sad!]

Maybe I picked the wrong 'Forum" and should have put it under "Puna Politics" - nobody goes on a tangent there! [:p]

Don't give up. It is a good topic for discussion. My first post on this was based upon people asking for higher taxes to keep state and county jobs from being eliminated. Tax evasion goes right along with it. My post was relevant.

Unfortunately, 3 other members attacked me in multiple posts soon after. I simply tried to defend myself. I even offered to remove those defensive posts if the others removed theirs. Apparently, they won't as they feel it is OK to attack others.

I apologize Menehune. Really. This topic is valid whether or not any of us agree with the "Tax Squad" concept.

There will be some major changes in Hawaii and on the Mainland I fear. The talking heads say that we are headed out of the recession, but that Hawaii is far behind the Mainland and will still feel deeper cuts even as the Mainland recovers.

Time will test our mettle for certain. Mahalo plenty.[Smile]

For what it is worth, I think the topic was an excellent one. As happens, things get sidetracked sometimes. I think we have moved on.

I will agree with an earlier post that tax evasion is relevent here. My problem is what I percieve as enforcement against the "little guy".

The very wealthy avoid taxes by exploiting loopholes, heavily lobbying the legislature, and keeping lawyers on retainer for this express purpose. Legal? well yes. Ethical? that's not so clear cut.

I would venture to say that the majority of these small "cash business" people avoid taxes for medical reasons; I'm talking about back problems;
Back taxes, back rent, back car payments ............The kind of problems that even a tax attorney can't fix.

I LOVE IT! Forever, those who want to raise every tax imaginable (libs) have claimed that this helps the economy, while the anti-tax (conservatives) believe that raising taxes hurts commerce.

Finally, an admission of fact by a lib, that lowering or eliminating taxes helps the economy!

Thanks for helping explain this Devany!

I am with Jerry, I do not think that food should be taxed... better yet, locally grown food. Why don't we petition the Governor to make every consumable food product grown in hawaii tax exempt? That might actually encourage people to shop locally and that is better for the local economy in the end.

There is a huge reason why Girl Scouts are apparently exempt from scrutiny but Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts may not be . . . (hint) it has alot to do with their philosophy on what they consider to be desirable role models and troop leaders.

there is nothing in state laws that exempt Girl Scout cookies from taxes if they want to tax the sale of the cookies. However, everytime states have sought to tax the cookies, the uproar from the public was so intense they dropped the idea. It's a double standard when you see charitable thrift store having to collect and remit taxes, but the Girl Scouts' cookies enjoy a free ride.

Now if the gov't could just use this law to get the cash based drug dealers to pay their share. That would be a lot more income for the gov't than little mom and pop businesses and MAYBE rationalize the use of our tax dollars on this new gov't agency.
