When legally married gay couples who can receive all the Federal benefits move to Hawaii do they lose the Federal benefits they have?
What about retired military currently married and living in Washington State. They retire and move to Puna... Do the Federal benefits (healthcare, spousal pension) stop because they are no longer in a state where gay marriage is legal?

Really think you should be asking this on some sort of legal forum or even just asking a lawyer. Answers here are likely to go from things that are utterly sound to completely illegal or very stupid and it's not always obvious which they are.

Maybe the supreme court answered your question yesterday with their DOMA ruling.

I assume Hawaii stopped short of saying that they allow gay marriages by saying they allow "civil unions" for a reason. Whats the difference? Sounds the same to me! So your saying the Supreme court decision doesn't affect Hawaii? I'm confused...

Consult a lawyer.
That said, media coverage clearly indicates that Federal benefits are extended to same-sex couples whose marriage is recognized by their State, meaning you must be married and reside in a same-sex-marriage state (not necessarily the same one). Civil unions or domestic partnerships are not considered "marriage" for the purpose of establishing Federal benefits.
Importing benefits by means of a smoke-and-mirrors "residency" claim may work, but now you need a lawyer and a tax attorney, and you better keep excellent records which clearly demonstrate your "residency" (or lack thereof) to both states.

Given that I seriously doubt anyone here could have responded with a definitive answer - a big T
