"Fire officials identified Brian Hughes, 33, captain of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots, as the firefighter who died. The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks firefighter was working in an area on the east end of the Ferguson Fire with many dead trees and was struck by one of them, park officials said in a statement.

Hughes was originally from Hilo, Hawaii, and had been with the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots for four years, the officials said."

This hero was raised in Hilo.

What a sacrifice.

Is he a grandson of Maxine Hughes? This is a hard way to remember some of the great people I have had the pleasure of knowing. So sad.

I dropped a line to Tink this evening. I can tell you that the name of the unfortunate and heroic Hilo firefighter isn't Tink's, so am assuming Tink is safe. I'll pass on any news I get.

Tink responded and is fine. He's been fighting the fires in CA and is tired and upset about the loss of life as you might imagine.
