Yikes.  I fish down there from time to time.

This morning, one of the news stations said the collapse/rescue happened at the bottom of Maku'u, where there are often plenty of fishermen, while the newspaper story said the bottom of Paradise Drive. The video showed bystanders watching the helicopters, but there weren't any houses visible. Does anyone know for sure where it happened?

Punaperson -
It was two separate incidents:
* Sunday afternoon two divers at the end of Maku'u were rescued by helicopter when they experienced some trouble.  I believe both were OK.  Helicopter, fire truck, ambulance, and I believe police response.
* Monday AM - Cliff collapse as noted in the OP

One of the divers, a 36 year old man from Orchidland didn't make it.  He was rescued fairly quickly, but had been underwater before the helicopter arrived.

Where fisherman fell in water when cliff collapsed.
Note ironwood in water, smooth light gray cliff face above it.

HOPTE, do you know if that is in the area of the County "park" off of Paradise, or, the area behind the wall at the very end?

Hope the fisherman is doing okay, healing quickly.

Kiana,
If you come down Paradise, turn right on Beach Road, there’s a large shady parking area on the ocean side after the first two houses.  On the left side of the parking area is a rock wall.  I walked toward the wall to an area that juts out far enough that I could look back to the right and take the photo.

Thanks HOPTE. I know that area, always fishermen there, and others. Nice shady spot with all those ironwood trees. I thought that might be it.

I was just saying recently that I wanted to find a local Uncle to teach me the nuances of cliff fishing (best pole, tackle, bait, tides etc.) I think I've lost that for a while now.

This post from the PW ʻwayback machineʻ has stuck with me over the years... every time I am near a cliff edge here, the idea of being off the cliff & out at sea..... YIKES
