Wow. Now we are resorting to groups of private, secret police...
With a public web page anyone can join and no enforcement powers, as demonstrated.
I get it's hard to be the bad guy and tell people you may know to pack up their party and go home, but the police or other officials should be doing that aggressively. If not, more people will needlessly get sick and die.

Economist Paul Brewbaker did a live on-line interview this morning in which he discusses the pandemic and Hawaii's economy. If you have the time, it's worth the half hour it runs:
https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/08/0...ht-hawaii/
He blames both the state and the general population for not adhering to the well known pandemic control measures strictly enough or long enough. He called the tourist quarantine "an effective blunt instrument" to keep infection out, but added that a more nuanced approach involving a rapid testing, tracing, and strict quarantine program was needed until and unless a vaccine is developed. He was quite blunt in saying that the state had not shown any indications of coming up with such a program that would work.
Dr. Brewbaker also says (no surprise here) that the Hawaii economy will have very high unemployment for a long time even after the tourist flow resumes. He says that housing prices have held their own except for condos in high vacation rental areas. And he also put the lie to most people's fantasies about economic diversification. Other than perhaps being a bit more self sufficient in agriculture, he says, "Knock yourself out. Nothing's keeping you from building factories . . . oh, except that China has factories that you can't beat?" Basically, he says we have to take what we have and make it work better.

On Wednesday, Lieutenant Governor Josh Green suggested a 30-day lockdown order for the Aloha State is likely to be announced by Governor David Ige very soon.
Perhaps they're still mulling. Myself, I don't understand the delay -- it's as if Ige thinks "maybe it will be better tomorrow" followed by "better give it one more day". At the rate things are going, we are "likely" to be over 300 cases/day "very soon".

It’s the same greatest hits strategy our government officials employed at Mauna Kea Access Road, a golden oldie, a blast from the past, gone from the charts but not from our hearts:
“What do you think? Should we do something? Or give it another day and see if they go home on their own? Yeah, let’s wait and see what happens tomorrow.”

Here is a sobering report from HNN:
https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2020/08/05...ls-closed/
The neighbor island mayors want the interisland quarantine reinstated and schools kept closed. There is also mention of increased enforcement of quarantine and mask/distancing on Oahu. Kinda late, huh? I don't know anyone who trusted the state or the counties to effectively enforce the necessary restrictions. What success we had has been because of voluntary compliance, and that seems to have gone out the window on Oahu. Fasten your seat belts.

1) The neighbor island mayors want the interisland quarantine reinstated and schools kept closed.
2) After more than four months, the US State Department on Thursday lifted its advisory warning US citizens against traveling abroad.
3) Although the guidance from the diplomatic agency has been lifted, American travelers continue to face travel restrictions in countries worldwide due to rising cases of the deadly disease in the United States.
Mixed messages from local, national and international authorities. And we wonder why people are confused, and they don’t, won’t, or can’t figure out they really should just wear a mask, wash their hands, and stay six feet apart? And not hang out all night long at a Baldwin Beach drum circle with 200 of their closest friends, figuratively and literally?

In today's news:
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The governor has reinstated the mandatory, 14-day quarantine for inter-island travel effective Tuesday amid a surge of new COVID-19 infections on Oahu.

Fortunately...only the parks and beaches on Oahu are being closed.

I don't believe there's really a problem. If there were, the government would have an appropriate response (more testing, more contact tracing, more restrictions, consistent rules).

Several news agencies are saying that the test result reporting system has broken down again, so we don't really know how many new cases there were in the last 24 hours . . . except that they think it is at least 200 instead of the 53 they said earlier. They did tell us not to believe that lower number when they announced it, though. We're at the point where it's actually refreshing to hear them tell us up front that they are wrong rather than later. That's how low our expectations of competency have become. Speaking of which, why did Ige the Idiot wait until next Tuesday to resume the interisland quarantine?
