We live in lava zone 3 and have never filed a claim but our State Farm home insurance bill has gone up $1500 from last year.  Can anyone recommend an insurance broker or firm that might be able to give us a more reasonable quote?  Mahalo for your kokua.

Very informative discussion and presented quite frankly and with sanity.

This one is really frying my brain.  Hawaii leaders are crowing about a new ag investment by the state.  Ag good.  "They" believe that Hawaii pip-squeeks will consume 5x as many eggs as they do now and this belief is being used to help sell the investment.  

Some folks who are intimately involved in school lunches have their concerns that Hawaii's keiki will comply. They say kids are looking for meat in their school lunches. 

Small scale farmers feel that no one is interested in ideas they hatch up, and that the proposed egg cracking facility will just benefit big players.

Some members of the board, who are perched in positions to know, feel that Hawaii government is just winging it on this one.  Once we cross this road we are definitely in the egg business and that's no yolk.  Cluck around and find out.

Personally, ideas that boost Hawaii's food resiliency always get the benefit of my doubt.  I am keeping an open mind.  I'd be grateful for any wisdom anyone can lend.  If you're interested, please take the time to really comb through the article.  Scratch below the surface on this one.

Anyone know where I can buy some black grapes in the Hilo/Puna area? Need them for tomorrow.  Red and green won't do.  I looked at most of the national grocery store chains ...Safeway, Target, Walmart etc. All sold out or out of stock.

Science operations at the UKIRT observatory on Maunakea will conclude on September 15, and the facility will be completely removed from the summit by 2023, officials say. 

On Wednesday, the University of Hawaiʻi announced its plan, making UKIRT the third Maunakea telescope to be decommissioned.

“Aging facilities and funding challenges, especially given the expiration of the UH master lease in 2033, in addition to the obligations contained in the UH Master Plan, led to the decision to end science operations,” a university news release stated. “The U.S. Naval Observatory has sponsored scientific research at UKIRT for many years, supporting decades of discovery through the telescope.”

Police remind motorists to drive sober this Fourth of July weekend : Big Island Now

Hawaiʻi Police Department officers so far in 2026 arrested 382 motorists for driving under the influence on Big Island roadways, and 15 fatal crashes claimed the lives of 17 people on Hawaiʻi Island.

“Behind every number is a family, a friend and a community forever changed,” said a release from Hawaiʻi Island police.

You would think people would get the message by now, but...
